INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

The HQ SACT Internship Programme 2023 aims to provide a small number of current or recent students with the opportunity to 'intern' with HQ SACT in Norfolk, Virginia, HQ SACT, Staff Element Europe, Mons, Belgium, SACT Representative in Europe, Brussels, Belgium or at the Joint Analysis Lessons Learned Centre (JALLC) in Monsanto, Lisbon, Portugal.

Interns will benefit by gaining understanding of an International Organization, while substantiating their Curriculum Vitae. All internship placements will be for a six-month period, with start dates to be determined individually as interns cannot start their internship without their NATO Secret security clearance, and the timing for the completion of clearances varies by nation.

Internship Programme Specialty Areas (click on the Specialty Area to see its Job Description)

HQ SACT – Norfolk, Virginia, USA

JALLC, Lisbon, Portugal

Applicants must review the “Job Descriptions” for each of these speciality areas for specific details on each area to help them determine which (if any) Job Descriptions are of interest to them. Please note that when filling out an application for the 2023 ACT Internship Programme, applicants are required to provide their “top five” choices for placement by selecting the relevant Job Description, and also indicate whether the applicant would also be prepared to be placed in a position that is not one of their “top five”.

Programme Objectives

To provide the Organization with access to the latest theoretical and technical knowledge that the intern can apply through practical work assignments, as well as with additional staff resources.

To provide interns with an opportunity to learn from the HQ SACT or JALLC community and get a better understanding and a more balanced view of the Organization.

To expand understanding of ACT, JALLC and NATO in Alliance countries.

Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for Internship

2023 Interns will be either current post graduate students or recent post graduates who have obtained their post graduate degree as of 1 January 2022.

Age: Over 21 at the time of internship (for insurance reasons) and not older than 35 at the time of application;

Nationality: Nationals of a NATO member country; Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, The Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America.

Languages: The two official languages of NATO are English and French, however the work both oral and written in this Headquarters as a whole is conducted mainly in English.

Insurance and Immigration Requirements: Interns are required to have health insurance coverage, and take care of formalities with the U.S. authorities regarding their stay in the United States.

Security Clearance: All interns will require a security clearance from their national authorities prior to starting their internship at HQ SACT or JALLC.

Remuneration

Interns will be paid a lump sum of approximately $1,490 per month (€963.00 per month for JALLC interns) and will be reimbursed for travel costs on joining and separation from the Headquarters, subject to the internship regulations in force. The payment is not exempt from taxation.

Applicants are advised that the cost of living accommodation and transportation rates in the Norfolk area are very high and it is extremely difficult for interns to live on their monthly internship stipend alone.

2023 Internship Application Process

There will be one call for applications for the 2023 Internship Programme, early January 2022 to 30 April 2022, with start dates determined individually. Internships will be for a six-month period.

Application packages shall be one single pdf document, consisting of the following documentation, and are to be submitted electronically to intern@act.nato.int.

Packages that include any additional documentation will be rejected:

  • The completed application form in English and type written, with
    • Attached English language certification from an internationally recognized English testing body (e.g. TOEFL) (if already in possession of a certification);
    • Attached copy of the Bachelor’s Degree Certificate or post graduate Degree Certification, with a translation into English if applicable. Applications including Transcript type documentation will be rejected;
    • Attached copy of a NATO Secret security clearance (if already in possession of a clearance);
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Motivational letter, indicating why you want to intern at HQ SACT/JALLC and why you chose a specific speciality area/Job Description. You are required to indicate why your particular educational background and field of study makes you especially well suited to intern in that speciality area(s) bearing the Job Description requirements in mind.

If a response to your submission is not received within 5 working days then you should resubmit your application package.

Applicants who are closely related in the first or second degree to a member of a NATO body, in particular, on the SACT or JALLC staff, are also required to include a statement to his effect, identifying their relative by name and position.

Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered further; and, due to the high number of applications, no follow-up correspondence will occur if the applicant fails to submit all of the required application papers (as described above). Before submitting an application, prospective applicants should consult the "Frequently Asked Questions" on the HQ SACT Internship Programme 2022.

The closing date for applications is 30 April 2022; any applications received after 1700hrs (EST) on 30 April 2022 will, with no exceptions, be rejected as an untimely submission.

A security clearance from the intern’s national authorities is mandatory before the internship can start. HQ SACT will not provide assistance to initiate the process to gain a security clearance, until after an intern receives a conditional offer of acceptance into the Internship Programme. Applicants should not take any independent action to apply for a NATO Secret security clearance through their national authorities.

If the intern holds a grant or scholarship, this should be made known in the application.
